Endometriosis is a chronic medical condition that occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus. In a typical menstrual cycle, the endometrium thickens in preparation for a possible pregnancy and sheds if pregnancy does not occur, resulting in menstruation. With endometriosis, the tissue that has grown outside the uterus behaves in a similar way—it thickens, breaks down, and tries to shed during the menstrual cycle.
